The Daily LiveStock Report

“Old is Gold” – Discover how we built the Daily Livestock App, by keeping the robust UX/UI untouched, while modernizing the back-end.

One of our latest projects involved Steiner Consulting overhauling their subscription-based app. The app is called The Daily Livestock Report. The app was initially created for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the biggest commodity exchange in the world, to provide traders and market participants with high frequency data and analysis. Today the app reaches thousands of active market participants along the food supply chain in the US and around the world, from individual farmers and livestock producers to agro processing companies and hedge funds. Over time, this diversity of clients resulted in a need for diverse subscription plans and payment methods.

The application was operating on the highly tested ASP.NET framework. While always reliable and user friendly, that framework was not able to respond to increasing demand or support the need for different subscription plans and payment methods. That was also true for the UX/UI design and the bootstrap front end.

Steiner Consulting and its clients were fond of the simplicity of the original app and we sought to maintain both the look and feel of it in our upgrade. Besides a few small modern widgets, we mostly focused on optimizing the front end for different terminals.

For the backend we worked with Flask, a Python framework, to give more flexibility and scalability to the app, MySQL for the database and AWS for the hosting, Sendgrid for mailing services, and Stripe and Paypal for easier payments giving users the power to tweak subscription prices and expand payment options for everyone in the company.

Admins got some cool tools – newsletter and quarterly uploads, broadcast messaging, selective distribution, and discrete ability to attach users to company subscriptions. Clients got easy subscription management, downloadable newsletters, and quarterly reports at their fingertips.
